9 weeks pregnant

Development of the baby

The baby advances to a fetus from being the embryo during this week and is slightly more than 1 ½ inches big. Baby’s gender can also be found out by this week.

The embryonic tail completely disappears by this week and all features are now developed. The fully formed eyelids are shut tightly and they open during the 28th week. Joints in the knees, wrists, elbows and ankles are now flexible and well developed; this allows free movement of the baby inside the amniotic sac. The valves and the four chambers of the heart begin to develop during the ninth week. With the help of an ultra sound a strong heart beat, of 150 beats a minute can be detected at this stage.

The baby opens his mouth for the very first time during this week and can start sucking at his thumb and can also make a fist! The eyes are fully formed and ready however the membrane covering the eyes is still closed. The vocal chords and the baby’s salivary glands begin to develop. The feet and hands of the baby develop at a very fast pace during this period. The head tends to curve into the baby’s chest, as it’s relatively large when compared to the body. Muscles continue to develop and the elbows as well as the sex organs have been fully developed by this time.

Changes in a mother’s body

As your appetite begins to improve, you may notice an increase in your weight. Slight spotting is normal during this week; however, you should consult your doctor if you have pain or cramps along with bleeding which is bright red in color. You may experience nose bleeds or nasal congestions due to the swelling of the mucus membranes due to the increase in the estrogen and progesterone levels. Use a humidifier or a vaporizer if this happens.

For some, symptoms of morning sickness may peak during the ninth week; these will begin to subside gradually after the 11th week. If the morning sickness is severe and negatively affects your health and weight you should consult your doctor.

If you constantly have nausea or feel tired more often, your sexual desires may decline during this stage. On the other hand, some women may have an opposite effect because of the increase in the hormonal levels.
What to expect?
Between the 9th week and the 12th week, your doctor may ask you to take a few prenatal tests which would help in detecting any genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities if you have had a family history or are more than 35 years old. You need to be aware of your dental health as many women develop gum infections or cavities while being pregnant. Increase calcium intake and flossing and brushing should be done regularly in order to prevent dental problems.

Make sure that you have the right posture if you have to sit or stand for a long time. Your diet should be rich in fiber and you should try to exercising regularly so that your digestion and circulation are kept in check. As your stomach stretches, make sure you wear clothes that are comfortable and slightly loose.
